Christmas time in Lucerne

It is the most contemplative time of the year, characterized by candlelight and the scent of cookies, ice flowers on the window, mysterious Christmas stories, bone-chilling cold and romantic nights by the blazing fireplace. Gingerbread, Printen, Stollen, Spekulatius, cinnamon stars, mulled wine, and hot apple juice are all part of the festivities, and they are available at the Christmas market in a large selection and of the best quality.

Most visitors go to the Christmas market with family, friends or colleagues. Singles may find the loved one they want to spend the holidays with. And some people review the best moments of the year over a good glass of mulled wine and look forward to the well-deserved Christmas break. Christmas market is really a nice mood for the holidays.

During Advent, the old town of Lucerne is once again transformed into a small city of colorful wooden houses, which are open daily from noon until the evening. In the heart of Lucerne, but a bit away from the hectic and noisy shopping mile, the Christmas market spreads a unique contemplative atmosphere. In countless cozy market stalls, a diverse range of special gift items awaits the shoppers. As a special service of the organizers, the purchased items are transformed into beautiful gift packages free of charge at the parcel stand.

In the center of the Christmas market, as its trademark, so to speak, the largest Advent wreath in Central Switzerland shines on the Franciscan fountain with a diameter of more than three meters, decorated with hundreds of lights and baubles as well as four meter-high candles.

On the steps in front of the fountain, brass groups and choirs with mostly local young performers offer Christmas music almost daily. All around there is the spicy smell of punch and mulled wine. The ambiance invites you to linger and enjoy. The new mulled wine cup is likely to become a coveted collector's item again this year.

A special bijou of the Christmas market is the unique nativity scene, created by a local artist. The life-size and lively figures are very realistically recreated of the period. The mother Mary, lying on the straw and holding the baby Jesus in her arms, is particularly moving.

Involuntarily, one thinks: "This is how it might have looked 2000 years ago in the stable of Bethlehem".

While the adults enjoy the wide range of culinary delights, the little ones can take a few laps on the Christmas carousel.

The Lucerne Christmas Market offers young and old an unforgettable pre-Christmas experience that no one should miss.
