My Internship at a Luxury Resort in Maldives

It’s no secret that internships are the most effective way for students to gain work experience before graduation. In fact, studies show that 7 out of 10 internships turn into full-time jobs, and at B.H.M.S., students with passion and curiosity for the hospitality industry can benefit from the school’s links to the leading companies within the industry.

Mr. Renjian Tan from Malaysia, a BA in Hospitality Management student of B.H.M.S., during his 3-year experience from internships, worked at the Front Office and F&B departments, and now he shared with us his overall experience from his final internship at the Niyama Private Islands, a 5* Resort in Maldives!

Renjian’s role in this internship was ‘Thakuru’ which in local language means ‘Serve the loyalties’ and this position is similar to reception or butler service.
The list of his responsibilities was long but very interesting, as he should take care of guests’ needs before their arrival, as well as during their stay in the property.

Some of his main responsibilities at 'Thakuru'  were the following:

  • Itinerary, registration card, map of the island and room keys preparation
  • Offer transportation services using a buggy car, being fully aware of the meal plan of guests.
  • Coordinate guests’ requests with the hotel’s departments, look after the well-being of guests, ensuring that they are comfortable, satisfied and happy with the services and activities throughout their stay.

Also, Renjian told us that during his internship he gained some crucial skills of the Hospitality industry such as: Social skills, Teamwork skills, Interpersonal skills, Organizational skills and Practical skills.

He really enjoyed being a part of the Front Office team as he got to meet new people and experienced new cultures every single day.
Every day was a new learning experience especially with the great management and wonderful staff’ he said.

For his future career goals, he’s planning to return to Niyama Private Islands as a permanent staff as he is certain that this will be a good stepping stone in achieving his ambition to become a hospitality leader!

We wish Mr. Renjian Tan all the best and a bright future career in the Hospitality Industry!
